Our first official book came out today! And while we’d like to take full credit for it, I guess we should G.L. Hoffman also give some recognition to the other 235 authors who contributed to it…
The Age of Conversation 2: Why don’t they get it? is the collaborative product of 237 authors–all of whom work within the marketing industry, with, I’m sure, some overlap from the publishing and media industries. Our chapter, or page rather, is called “My Name is Marketer and I’m an Addict…” and it’s somewhat abstract. Given that the book’s title is so self-righteous, we didn’t want to fall into the trap of preaching. But we did want to express our opinion that a lot of marketers simply sit around waiting for the next big thing to hit them, rather than going out and discovering something new for themselves. I imagine this could be said of all industries, and of people in general, really. After all, what’s the first thing a company does when creating its new website or business model? They find out what their competitors are doing. Sure, it’s a necessary evil but one that people often give too much credence to. The idea is to improve, not emulate.
I actually wanted to compare marketers to copycat serial killers–people who see something will get them quick, widespread attention, and duplicate it to achieve the same despite future repercussions–but Kate wasn’t a big fan. I still think it was a great approach, if a little gruesome and far-fetched
When we wrote our chapter several months ago, we were a fledgling company. (That’s how print works after all–you write something only to see it come into fruition days, weeks or months later.) While our perspective hasn’t changed, I think we could have offered more concrete backing for our points now than we did then.
We’re still proud mothers, though, so check it out. Buy it. Learn from it. Enjoy it: https://www.amazon.com/Age-Conversation-Why-Dont-They/dp/0615264204
