How to Make the Most of a Remote Summer Internship with a New York City PR Firm

Reading Time: 4 minutes

When I applied for an internship with New York City PR firm Channel V Media, I never expected that it would be a remote summer internship.

Internships are the start of your professional career and I wondered how I was supposed to evolve during this experience if I was stuck in my hometown for the summer.

The good news is that it is possible to learn and grow from home, if you put in the work.

Here are 5 tips on how to get the most out of your remote summer internship with a New York City PR Firm.

Adapting to Remote Summer Internships By Separating Spaces

Bright-eyed and bushy tailed, I woke up on the first day of my internship with a New York City PR Firm. I had been anxiously awaiting what my next new adventure had in store for me.

My commute to the office was much shorter than I had envisioned it would be just a few months back. I had a thrilling trip all the way from my bedroom, downstairs to the kitchen and then my backyard.

Due to coronavirus, my first experience with a New York City PR Firm was a remote summer internship.

First, I had to find the right space in my home to work productively. It was a bit of a challenge – I have a very big and loud family.

I thought it was going to be impossible to get anything done. Luckily I was able to take advantage of the beautiful summer weather. I worked in my backyard as much as possible, and of course, on rainy days I stayed in my room.

I found that it’s so important to find a designated workspace for yourself, it will make you feel more organized and ready to take whatever the day has in store.

Remote Summer Internships Mean Going the Extra Mile

Interning with a Public Relations firm from home definitely has its advantages, as there is always a lot of work to be done. Following the team’s morning call, I receivetasks that should be completed by the end of the day. Some are more time consuming than others. If I finish up early, I make sure to ask if there is anything else I can do. I try my best to go the extra mile because I want to learn and I want to do more.,

It’s important to take initiative. This action reflects well on work skills and your character.

Help as much as you can, as you will always learn something from anew task and your supervisors will appreciate it.

Research EVERYTHING

One of my first tasks for a client was to create a presentation of companies who were voicing their opinions and involving themselves in the fight against injustice.. It was a heavy topic, and at first, I didn’t know much about it.

As a public relations intern, research is a huge part of the daily tasks. You don’t have to know everything about everything, but research will get you there.

Get to Know Who You Are Working With

Don’t let the boundaries of remote working stop you from connecting with the people you are working with.

On our first Zoom call, we went around and introduced ourselves; our name, our major and what we were looking to gain from the internship. It felt a bit like the first day of school.

I realize now how important that exercise was. Our supervisor encouraged us to reach out to her if we ever want to talk. I found that taking advantage of this opportunity madeworking remotely more personable.

Interning remotely means that you don’t get to see the people you are working with in- person. Instead, you collaborate with them digitally. It can be a challenge to get to know them , but taking a little bit of time to learn more about them goes a long way.

Never Be Afraid to be Unsure

As a remote intern I am communicating through a screen. We use digital channels like text, email or apps like Slack.  Sometimes, things can get lost in translation. I always make sure that I speak up if I am unsure of how to do something or need a little extra explanation. It is the best way to learn.

Never be afraid to ask for help. As an intern, you are not expected to know everything right off the bat, you are there to learn and grow.

Taking a remotesummer Internship with a New York City PR Firm has its highs and lows. Don’t let remote working or a remote internship put you off. You will learn something and refine your skills.

Of course, I was initially upset to learn that my internship would become remote because I had no idea what to expect, butut I am so grateful for the challenge.

I was able to adapt and grow in a completely new type of work experience.

That is definitely something I will take out of this experience: I am made the most out of a less than ideal situation, and will be more knowledgeable in the end.

You determine how much or how little you learn. It is all about taking the initiative for yourself.
