Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your brand visible, accurate and recommendable inside AI-generated answers. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Google’s AI Overviews a question, AEO determines whether the answer mentions you, describes you correctly and sends the asker your way.
This guide explains where answer engines get their answers, how AEO differs from SEO and GEO, and what actually moves the needle, with real measured results rather than theory.
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine is an AI system that responds to a question with a synthesized answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot are answer engines. So is Google when AI Overviews or AI Mode answer the query on the results page itself.
The behavior shift matters more than the technology. With traditional search results, you typed questions or keywords and were shown links to articles with a description of the article below each one. With AI-driven search, people ask full questions in natural language and read the answer they are given. Research from the Pew Research Center found that when an AI summary appears, people click through to websites far less often.
This has changed both consumer and B2B buyer behavior. The answer has now replaced a lot of research. For example, in the past, if someone was looking for a market research company, they might go on Google and type in “best market research company,” get some links and check out each one. Now, in the same scenario, the same person might say to Claude or another AI engine, “Can you suggest the best market research company for my B2B SaaS company?” The AI engine will present a recommendation.
AEO vs. SEO: what actually changes
Traditional SEO earns your pages a position in ranked search results. AEO earns your brand a place inside the synthesized answer. The disciplines overlap, because answer engines are built on top of the indexed web: pages that cannot be crawled cannot be cited, and content that never ranked anywhere rarely gets retrieved.
The difference is what each one optimizes for. SEO optimizes for position and clicks. AEO optimizes for citation, accuracy and recommendation, outcomes that can happen without any click at all. A brand can lose traffic and gain influence at the same time, because the person who reads an AI answer that recommends you may never visit your site until they are ready to buy.
The practical consequence is that AEO adds work SEO never required. Search engines evaluated your pages. Answer engines evaluate your reputation: what your site says, and what everyone else says about you.

AEO vs. GEO vs. AI SEO
You will see the same discipline called answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO), AI SEO, LLM SEO and half a dozen other names. They are not meaningfully different things. Our advice is to ignore the acronym debate entirely.
I like to look at every question in the sales and marketing funnel that people ask our business and make sure that our website answers those questions. There are bottom-of-funnel questions that matter more because that is where prospects buy.
Pick the questions that matter to your business, measure what the engines say today, and work the inputs. The name on the invoice changes nothing about the work.
How answer engines choose their answers
Answer engines build responses from two places. Trained knowledge is what the model learned before its cutoff date; it changes slowly, as coverage accumulates and new training runs ingest it. Live retrieval is what the engine reads right now: search results, news, review sites, forums and trusted sources it pulls into the answer. Perplexity and ChatGPT with search lean on retrieval; parts of every engine still lean on trained knowledge.

Across both paths, four inputs decide whether you appear. Technical foundations let engines crawl and parse your site. Owned content gives them clear, structured answers to extract, and schema markup helps them read it.
Earned media gives them independent evidence about you. And measurement tells you whether any of it changed the answers.
A simple way to hold the whole model in your head: SEO helps AI find you. Content helps AI understand you. PR gives AI independent reasons to believe you.

The layer most explainers skip: independent evidence
Most of what is written about AEO focuses on your own website: answer-first formatting, question-based headings, structured data. That work is real and necessary. It is also the part every serious competitor already does, which is why it rarely decides anything on its own.
The deciding layer sits off your site. When an engine answers a high-stakes question, such as which provider to trust, it weighs what independent sources say about you far more heavily than what you say about yourself, for the same reason a journalist does not take a press kit at face value. Traditional media makes up roughly 43% of the sources ChatGPT says it references for its answers, according to our 2026 Attention Economy PR Report. Coverage in publications the engines already trust is the input that changes what they say.
One counterintuitive finding from our client work: authority beats audience. Engines weigh topical credibility over raw reach, so a focused trade publication can shape an AI answer more than a general-interest outlet a hundred times its size. We have watched niche outlets put exact phrases into engines’ mouths.
What AEO looks like when it works
Definitions are cheap; measured change is not. Three results from our own client benchmarks show what the practice produces. A weather intelligence company reached 100% narrative alignment, with all three of its core narratives confirmed across all four major AI engines, and every engine now lists it first when asked to recommend a provider in its category. A software company that coined its own category name watched all four engines adopt that name, two of them word for word. And a cloud marketplace moved from being described in outdated terms to an 86% narrative alignment rate, with every engine now describing it the way it describes itself. How to start with AEO
You do not need a big program to begin. You need a baseline and a sequence.
- Benchmark what the engines say today. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude the questions your buyers actually ask, record the answers, and repeat each prompt, because AI answers vary between runs. Our guide to auditing your brand’s visibility on LLMs walks through the full method.
- Fix the foundations. Crawlability, clean site structure and structured data, so nothing blocks the engines from reading you.
- Make your pages answer questions. Lead sections with direct answers, use question-shaped headings, and keep claims specific enough to quote.
- Earn independent coverage on the gaps. Where the benchmark shows you absent or misdescribed, place stories in the outlets engines cite for that topic. PR and search have pulled in the same direction for years; we covered the mechanics in how PR improves search rankings, and answer engines have raised the stakes.
- Re-run the benchmark and compare. Same prompts, same engines, on a set cadence. Movement in the answers is the result; everything else is activity.
FAQs About AEO
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. SEO remains the foundation, because answer engines draw on the indexed web: a site that cannot be crawled cannot be cited. The two disciplines answer different questions. SEO decides whether your pages can be found and ranked; AEO decides whether your brand appears inside the answer itself. Companies that treat them as one connected practice get found by search engines and cited by answer engines at the same time.
Do you need special technology or markup for AEO?
No. There is no secret file or magic markup that puts a brand into AI answers, and Google has said no special schema is required to appear in its AI features. Clean structured data helps engines parse your pages, and that is worth doing. But the decisive inputs are clear, direct answers on your own site and independent coverage of your brand everywhere else.
Is AEO worth it for smaller companies?
Yes, and sometimes especially so. Answer engines cite the clearest, most corroborated source on a topic, not the biggest advertising budget. A focused company with deep expertise, consistent third-party mentions and well-structured content can appear in AI answers ahead of household names. In our own client work, small trade publications have shaped AI answers more than outlets with a hundred times their audience.
AEO is young enough that most of your competitors have not started, and the engines reward whoever gives them the clearest, best-corroborated version of a story. Start with the benchmark. What the engines say about you today is the only baseline you will ever get.
